What are Learning Parties?

Learning parties are designed for kids between 4-11 and are 90 minutes long (though kids often want them to go longer!).

How does it work?? We arrive approximately 30 minutes before the party starts to set up. Each party has 5-7 learning stations. Hosts are asked to make sure to have 5-7 adults who wish to engage with the children attend. Adults can be parents of the children attending, grandparents, or friends of the family. These adults will have the opportunity to help with a station, which will also provide them with different ideas they can take home and implement after the party is over. We provide all instruction needed. As children arrive, they start rotating throughout the different stations. They are welcome to stay at any one station as long as their interest allows. Kids don't usually want to stop so we ask that the host remind people to come at the start time to allow kids the maximum amount of time to participate. After the event is over, we will clean up while kids cut the cake, go on to other activities, or head home. We will make sure your home or other site is back in order before we leave.

Why do we need to provide adults?

"Once children are helped to perceive themselves as authors or inventors, once they are helped to discover the pleasure of inquiry, their motivation and interest explode." ~Loris Malaguzzi

Believography Learning Parties are a combination of all great minds coming together! Each parent offers a different perspective because of their different jobs and experiences. Each child gets to be exposed to the huge variety of knowledge and techniques offered by the parents. Believography staff are able to offer ideas for each station that inspire kids and parents to take the learning to the next level. This allows parents to take home new knowledge about activities and strategies they can implement with their kids after the party is over.

Why "Learning" Parties?

First and foremost, because we believe in the power of education. We want to equip and encourage all children to do create, dream, and be inspired. The activity they do may be creating a house out of marshmallows and toothpicks while the career that connects with that is engineering and the academic skills they learn (at an early age) are geometry and physics. We want to help parents figure out new ways to incorporate high level learning into the different activities they can do with their kids. Learning parties also develop vocabulary. We use words like “architect,” “building engineer,” “construct,” and “blueprints.” Using the vocabulary in context helps develop understanding.

We believe that education is fun! So much learning happens outside of the classroom. We want to recognize that and help kids and parents make the connections to create lifelong learners. We also want the kids to be able to take it home and continue the learning at home. All of the activities at the parties are hands-on and the majority of activities allow the kids to create something they can take home.

We believe children are capable of doing amazing things. We attempt to incorporate real life activities with real life tools into our learning parties. We know that kids always want to be bigger, older, smarter...so we help them work toward that. We also understand that children have something to teach us. As we watch, guide, encourage, and inspire, we learn techniques by listening to the kids. The kids are the inspirations for new activities, new learning parties, and new approaches.

We believe it’s important to do what you love. Elementary-aged kids are a long way from their careers, but what better time to start exposing them to all kinds of opportunities so they can start figuring it out? Our parties are not gender specific but are, instead, themed to inspire. By participating in the different parties, kids may find certain activities they could do for hours. Parents may discover their child has a talent they want to encourage and develop.

What if the parents don't want to or can't stay?

It's ok. We can work with you. Each Learning Party needs 5-7 adults. The adults do not need to be the parents (though we love having parents!). They can be friends, neighbors, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. If you are unable to ensure the presence of 5-7 adults, let us know. For an additional cost, we can provide the adults.

Do I have to have the Learning Party in my living room?

Most Learning Parties are held in peoples' homes. We make use of dining rooms, living rooms, kitchens, garages, and floors and have cloths to put down so that there is no mess for you when it's over. However, Learning Parties can also be held in community centers, churches, or under pavilions. We are open to exploring the possibilities with you.

Can my school have a Learning Party?

Of course! We love to work with schools, families who homeschool, after-school programs, slumber parties, birthday parties, neighborhood parties, and family reunions. If we've missed something, let us know.

Other than learning, what do the kids get out of it?

Each learning party has take-home items for every child. Every item is simple and hand-made by the child. It may be a hand made key ring holder, a container of bubbles, or a simple rocket. Items are consumable and practical. We've often had kids come up to us after the party to tell us how they are going to take the design home and develop it further. We want to make sure they have the knowledge and tools to do that.

Could we get pictures of the party?

Yes! We love taking pictures! If you would like to add that option, let us know. We will customize it to you. We can create a photo book, create an enlarged canvas wrap, or provide you with the digital negatives of your photos. Other options are available as well: mini-photo albums, mugs, prints, and more.
